I Can’t Sleep: How Stress and Pressure Keep You Awake

I can’t sleep.

If you are reading this because you typed "I can't sleep" into Google this is for you.

Three words typed into a search bar by thousands of people who are exhausted, frustrated and desperate for their brain to switch off.

But sometimes the problem is not simply sleep.

Sometimes the problem is everything your body has been carrying before you even get into bed.

The heavy, warm feeling behind your eyes.

The pressure above your right eye.

The throbbing sensation at the centre of your head.

That strange state where you cannot work out whether you have actually been asleep or awake.

Were those thoughts?

Were they dreams?

Was that conversation real, or did you imagine it?

Everything becomes tangled.

You are tired, but your mind feels switched on.

You want sleep, but your body feels like it has forgotten how to let go.

I can't sleep at night, take the quiz below to find out why you can't sleep at night

The exhaustion cycle after a sleepless night

Eventually you get up.

You make a coffee.

A strong one.

You need something to wake you up.

Then another one later.

And another.

You are not doing it because you are trying to create a problem. You are trying to function.

You have work.

Responsibilities.

People relying on you.

You need to get through the day.

But for some people, the very thing they are using to push through exhaustion can become part of the cycle that keeps sleep difficult.

By 11am you are already thinking about the evening.

Not because you are looking forward to relaxing.

Because you are already looking forward to having a drink.

Something to switch off.

Something to quiet everything down.

The pressure of looking like you are okay

Then comes the process of getting ready.

You freshen up.

You shave.

Or maybe you do not shave because it has been one of those nights where everything feels like too much effort.

You look in the mirror.

You see the tiredness.

The bags under your eyes.

The evidence that you have not rested.

So you try to hide it.

Makeup goes on.

You adjust your hair.

You try to look “normal”.

And then another cycle begins.

What will people think?

Do I look tired?

Can they tell?

Do I look okay?

Am I going to get through today?

The pressure does not disappear just because you have left the bedroom.

It follows you.

When your body feels wired but exhausted

For some people, the signs are not just tiredness.

It can feel like your body is stuck somewhere between exhaustion and alertness.

A tingling, wired feeling around your lips.

A dry mouth that feels like you have smoked 100 cigarettes or spent the night drinking.

That fluttering butterfly sensation when you start thinking:

“What if I cannot get back to sleep tonight?”

And then the fear of not sleeping becomes another pressure to carry.

The cycle continues.

Why generic sleep advice does not always address the real problem

There is a lot of advice available when you search “I can’t sleep”.

Go for a walk.

Do a low-concentration activity.

Avoid screens.

Avoid bright lights.

Listen to calming sounds.

Create a better bedtime routine.

Some of these things can absolutely help quieten the mind.

But they do not always address the pressure underneath.

Because sometimes the reason you cannot sleep is not because you have failed to relax.

Sometimes your body is responding to something it still believes needs attention.

Out of sight is not always out of mind

There is a common belief that if we stop thinking about something, it has gone away.

But there is a difference between putting something out of your mind and actually addressing it.

You can distract yourself.

You can stay busy.

You can tell yourself not to think about something.

But unresolved pressure does not simply disappear because you have stopped consciously focusing on it.

Your body can continue responding to pressures you have not dealt with.

The conversation you keep avoiding.

The situation you feel trapped in.

The emotions you have pushed down.

The responsibility you are carrying alone.

The constant need to appear like everything is fine.

Often, it is when everything becomes quiet at night that these pressures have the space to be felt.

Your body is not working against you

When you cannot sleep, it is easy to become frustrated with yourself.

Why can everyone else switch off?

Why is my brain doing this?

Why can’t I just relax?

But your body is not necessarily working against you.

It may be communicating something.

Sleep is when the distractions stop.

It is when there are no more tasks to complete, conversations to manage or people to respond to.

And that is often when the pressures you have been carrying finally have somewhere to surface.

Addressing pressure, not just managing symptoms

At Firm Ground®, the focus is not simply on managing the symptoms of stress.

It is understanding the pressures underneath them.

Because pressure affects how we think, feel, react and recover.

When the underlying pressure is understood and addressed, the body does not have to keep carrying the same level of alertness.

If you regularly find yourself searching “I can’t sleep”, the question may not only be:

“How do I get myself to sleep?”

It may also be:

“What is my body trying to tell me?”

You do not always need another technique.

Sometimes you need to understand what is keeping you awake.

You do not have to keep carrying the pressure alone

Understanding what is keeping you awake is the first step.

But awareness is only where change begins.

When you start recognising the pressures affecting your thoughts, emotions and behaviour, the next step is learning how to work through them.

Firm Ground® Circle gives you a place to continue that process with practical tools, guidance and resources designed to help you understand and manage the pressures affecting your life.

Find out what is keeping you awake at night.
