Family Conflict Therapy

Family conflict does not always happen under one roof.

It can be arguments with your partner, children or siblings at home. It can also be ongoing tension with parents, adult children, brothers, sisters, grandparents or wider family members you do not live with.

You may be dealing with shouting, slammed doors, silence, resentment, repeated arguments, guilt, obligation or the feeling that you are constantly walking on eggshells.

You may feel responsible for keeping the peace, saying yes when you want to say no, being treated differently from other family members, or finding yourself pulled into the same argument again and again.

Family conflict rarely starts with the argument itself.

There is often pressure underneath it.

Then later, instead of “Family Conflict Does Not Always Stay Inside the Home,” I’d change that heading to:

Family Conflict With Parents, Siblings and Wider Family

You can have your own home, your own partner and your own children and still be caught in long-standing conflict with the family you grew up in.

Old roles can remain in place for decades. One person is expected to give in. One person keeps everybody happy. Someone is always blamed. Someone is treated differently. Saying no creates guilt. Speaking up creates another argument.

Firm Ground® looks at the pressure, expectations and established responses keeping those patterns in place — whether the conflict is happening inside your household or with family members outside it.

Family Conflict Can Become a Cycle

When a family has been under pressure for long enough, people start responding to each other from that pressure.

One person shouts. Another withdraws.

Someone gives in to keep the peace and becomes resentful.

A parent repeats themselves until they explode.

Children learn how everyone reacts and begin responding around those reactions.

Eventually everyone can feel as though they are the problem.

You are not failing. You are stuck in a pattern that needs to be understood.

A Different Approach to Family Conflict Therapy

Firm Ground® does not begin by asking everyone to communicate more nicely while ignoring why communication has broken down.

The Firm Ground® methodology works through the pressure underneath family conflict: where it is coming from, how different people are responding to it and how those responses are affecting everyone else in the family.

The aim is to reduce the friction that keeps arguments repeating and create greater understanding, clearer boundaries and more controlled responses within the family.

This is not about deciding who is right and who is wrong.

It is about understanding what is happening underneath the conflict.

Lived and Professional Experience

The Firm Ground® methodology has been shaped by both professional practice and lived experience of family pressure and conflict.

That experience informs the way the work is delivered, but the focus remains on your family, your pressures and the patterns that need to change.

Start With a Conversation

If family arguments, tension or long-standing conflict are affecting your home or your wider family relationships, an introductory conversation gives us an opportunity to look at what is happening and whether Firm Ground® is appropriate for you.

Life at home can feel different.

The Calm No® Guide

This guide is an introduction to the Calm No Method, with a focus on saying no without guilt.

Parents who feel guilty, overwhelmed or like they are failing often find it difficult to say no—particularly in neurodiverse households, homes navigating ADHD or homes with younger children where emotions can run high and behaviour feels challenging.

When pressure builds, it is easy to become overwhelmed and fall into repeating patterns.

This guide helps parents say no more calmly, reduce guilt, create calm at home and stop feeling like they are failing.
