Dealing With Exam Pressure, Emotional Dysregulation & Why So Many Households Feel Heavy Right Now

Exams are not just stressful for teenagers.

Right now, many households are quietly feeling the pressure.

Tension feels higher. Small things become big things. Doors slam. Motivation disappears. Arguments happen over revision, sleep, phones, being late, forgotten homework or simply attitude.

Parents are exhausted. Teenagers feel overwhelmed. Somewhere in the middle, everyone starts clashing.

What many people do not realise is that exam stress does not just show up as stress.

It often shows up through behaviour.

Irritability. Withdrawal. Anger. Mood swings. Avoidance. “I don’t care.” Shutting bedroom doors.

Suddenly wanting to be left alone. Or becoming emotional over seemingly small things.

For some young people, pressure shows up loudly.

For others, it goes inward.

What looks like laziness, attitude or lack of effort can sometimes be overwhelm, fear of failure or emotional dysregulation.

And parents are not immune to pressure either.

Parents are often carrying:

  • work pressure

  • financial pressure

  • household demands

  • worry about their child’s future

  • the emotional weight of trying to keep everyone afloat

So what happens?

Pressure collides with pressure.

Teen overwhelmed. Parent overwhelmed. Communication sharpens. Defensiveness rises. Everyone stops feeling heard.

Many households right now are living with that heavy feeling.

That feeling of:

“I feel like I’m treading on eggshells.”

Or:

“Why are we arguing over everything lately?”

Or quietly:

“I feel like I’m failing.”

You are not failing.

My daughter is currently sitting her GCSE exams. She struggles with writing speed and has not received extra time or support in her exams. She knows she may not do as well as she would like simply because time is working against her.

Yet she still has a smile on her face and is as cool as a cucumber.

Her exact words were:

“I see how crazy everyone is getting about their exams and I’m not doing that.”

This is not accidental.

My daughter has been coached in understanding pressure and emotional regulation — giving her practical tools to navigate exam stress differently.

When it comes to exam pressure and mental health, this period can have a much bigger impact on young people than many realise.

Teenagers tell me they feel pressure because exam results will follow them for the rest of their lives.

The reality?

Exam results are fixable.

Exams can be retaken. Routes can change. Sometimes it simply means taking a little longer to get where you were going.

What often stays much longer is the impact unmanaged pressure can have on mental health, confidence and emotional wellbeing.

That is why I am running online Zoom sessions during the exam period to help teenagers and parents better understand pressure, reduce overwhelm and create calmer households during an already stressful time.

These sessions are designed for both parent and child — helping everyone better understand what is happening and each other.

If exam pressure is affecting your home right now, you are not alone.
